Dignity is not given.
It is built, together.
We work alongside communities across Africa so that children can learn, young people can earn, and families can rise on their own terms.
“When a child learns, a family lifts, and a whole community rises. That is the whole of our work, and we have watched it happen a quarter of a million times.”
An African foundation, led by the people it serves
Amka means rise. For eighteen years we have helped communities lift themselves out of poverty, for good.
We do it through the three things that change everything: an education, a livelihood, and access to clean water and health. We work where the need is greatest, we build local ownership into everything we do, and we stay until the work can stand on its own.
Four ways we open doors
Our programmes meet young people where they are, from a first classroom to a first job.
Classrooms
Building and equipping safe, bright classrooms in communities that have gone without.
Learn moreWe do not parachute in. We stay until the work stands
Every project begins with the parents, teachers and young people who will carry it forward.
That means the classrooms we build stay full, the scholarships we fund reach the students who need them most, and the skills we teach lead to real, local work. Change that lasts is change a community owns.
Eighteen years, in pictures
Change, one family at a time
Amina’s daughters
A borehole ended the daily walk for water. Her two daughters became the first girls in their family to finish secondary school.
Blessing’s shop
A grant and six weeks of training turned a roadside table into a proper shop. She now employs two other women.
Otu community
Parents and Amka rebuilt a collapsed school together. Three hundred children are learning again.
Samuel’s path
A scholarship carried Samuel from a village school to university, where he is training to become a teacher.
